Day 1: Start our 2 days Kampala city tour. Kabaka’s palace
After having the fingerlicking good breakfast at the hotel, we set out for our anticipated visit around Kampala city, with our first stop at the Kabaka’s palace, the official residence of the Kabaka. You will walk around and witness the beautiful architecture as you are fed with the fascinating Buganda kingdom history. The palace has four gates, each with its specific significance, also various antiques stand firm in the palace’s compound. You will also visit the Idi Amin torture chambers where he imprisoned civilians who disobeyed him.
Then slope down to the relaxing Kabaka’s lake, the deepest man made lake in Uganda, dug with hoes and rakes, under the orders of Kabaka Mwanga. The sight will soothe you from the scary tales of Idi Amin.
Lastly, move along the Royal mile which is one mile long from the palace to the parliament (Bulange), the Kabaka’s place of work. This is where political decisions are discussed. Along the royal mile are 52 trees that represent the 52 clans of Buganda. Artistic statues that represent significant clans are also satisfying to see. Afterwards, visit St. Balikuddembe Church in Kampala, built to remember the death of the first martyr St. Joseph Mukasa Balikuddembe. He was beheaded and burnt in 1885.
Then have a delicious meal for lunch in town. After, visit St. Matia Mulumba Church at Old Kampala. This was dedicated to the fifth martyr who had the most painful death. He was skinned alive and left to die. Wind up the day with a visit at the national Mosque of Uganda, Gadaffi Mosque. It is very large and beautiful with the best aerial view of Kampala.
Day 2: Uganda Martyrs’ trail.
After breakfast, travel along the Northern bypass heading towards the Namugongo Martyrs Shrine, located in Kira Municipality. People from all over the world gather here every 3rd of the year to commemorate the death of the 23 Anglicans and 22 Christians, who were killed ruthlessly by burning them alive. Orders were given by the then reigning king, Kabaka Mwanga. You will get a chance to fetch some holy water to take with you.
Have a sumptuous meal for lunch in areas of Naalya. Then travel along Masaka road to visit the Naggalabi coronation centre located in Buddo. This was where the first king of the baganda, Kintu, won against his brother, Bemba after fighting for kingship. Kintu slept in Bemba’s house that night to celebrate his victory, hence, it became the official coronation centre. So far six kings have been crowned here.
Wrap up the day with a visit to the St. Denis Ssebugwawo Church. He was the first martyr to die in the main outbreak of persecution.
